LORD’S SUPPER

Part 2: Jewish Passover celebration vs Jesus the Last night supper
Obviously, The Lord’s supper has its roots in the Jewish Passover celebration. In Matthew 26:17-29, we can read about Jesus last supper with his disciple. Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, where wilt thou we prepare for thee to eat the Passover? And he said, “Go into the city to such a man and unto him, The Master saith, my time is at hand; I will keep the Passover. (Matthew 26:17-18).From above we can say the first Lord’s Supper eat and drink at Passover night. But this supper cup is different than Passover cup. The Passover meal consisted of lamp, bitter herbs, and unleavened bread. It was instituted to celebrate and commemorate God’s liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The story told in Exodus 12:1-28. The meal was celebrated as a thanksgiving for the gifts of food, fellowship, and freedom. When Israelite children would later ask their parents, “What does this ceremony mean to you?” (Exod.12:26), the parents were refers to them these great events.

But when instituted the meal that we call the Lord’s Supper, it was not Passover meal he celebrated but rather entirely new ceremony with context of Passover. In The Lord’s supper we use only bread and wine. By the Lord’s supper we proclaim Jesus death until he comes. That’s means we celebrate this cup God’s liberation from sin of slavery.
We most know the following thing about these two meals:
-Jewish Passover celebration thanksgiving celebration of God’s liberation of Israelites form the slavery of Egypt, Whereas Lord’s supper/ Holy Communion is the celebration or remembrance of Jesus death of the cross which liberates us form the slavery of sin and devil.
- Passover celebration yearly celebration whereas Holy communion is the part of worship to Jesus and his work in cross, which can be celebrate daily, weekly as you and your local churches believes.
-In Passover celebration is covenant remembrance of Israelites, whereas Lord’s Supper is the new covenant remembrance to the Church of God (spiritual Israelites).
-In Passover celebration lamp, bitter herbs, unleavened bread whereas In Holy Communion we use only bread and wine. The thing is that we must know that both Passover celebration and Holy Communion element is symbolic representation of Jesus Christ, our saviour.
- We can say that Israelites Passover celebration is shadow of Jesus death in Cross. (Read Hebrew 10:1)
